Are Students Learning About Learning When Using Technology?

Session Title: Are Students Learning About Learning When Using Technology?

Time & Date: 11:50 A.M. – 12:35 P.M., Wednesday, June 17, 2009

Location: Rm. 155, Irving K. Barber Learning Centre (IKBLC)

Session Description: We’ve had over about a dozen years now since the emergence of web based learning and most colleges and universities are now using technology, in various ways, as part of the learning process. Several researchers have concluded in the last few years that it is important that we understand this phenomenon and build a research base about students’ experience of learning with technology. This presentation will cover some of the highlights of this research, particularly the extensive research programs initiated by JISC in the UK. Equally important, this presentation will argue why this research is important and why it leads to questioning what students are learning about learning when using technology. This presentation will close with an overview of a study which has attempted to add to the research on students’ experience of technology by investigating what students are learning about learning when using technology. Session participants are invited to come with their questions about what we need to know about students experiences with technology in the learning process and to share examples of learning with technology that have stood out for them. And of course, feel free to challenge this research or the presenter!
